Buy industrial scaffolding: scaffolding systems for plant construction, refineries & power stations
Industrial plants place entirely different demands on scaffolding than traditional building construction. Extreme heights, confined machinery rooms, cylindrical tanks, complex pipe bridges, heavy loads and harsh environmental conditions – this is everyday reality in plant construction, in refineries, power stations and on shipyards. Standard facade scaffolding is simply not up to the task here.
CETRAC supplies certified industrial scaffolding from leading manufacturers – modular scaffolding, load-bearing scaffolding and assembly scaffolding – with immediate availability from its Leipzig warehouse, international consultancy and worldwide delivery. This guide explains which scaffolding systems are suitable for which industrial applications, what to bear in mind during the planning stage, and how B2B-Kunden can source equipment efficiently with CETRAC.
Why industrial scaffolding differs fundamentally from construction site scaffolding
Anyone coming from a background in traditional building construction who has to erect scaffolding for an industrial project for the first time will quickly realise that the rules are different. The key differences are geometry, load and the environment.
Geometry: Industrial plants are rarely rectangular. Vessels, tanks, pipework, turbines and reactors have round, oval or irregular shapes. Frame scaffolding with fixed grid dimensions reaches its limits here. Modular scaffolding with variable connection points is the solution.
Load: In refineries and power stations, scaffolding must support heavy pipes, machine parts, tools and pallets of materials. Load classes 3 to 6 in accordance with DIN EN 12811 are standard here – far exceeding what standard painter’s scaffolding can withstand.
Environment: Aggressive media, heat, corrosion, high-pressure zones, explosion-proof areas – industrial environments place particular demands on the choice of materials, certifications and installation standards. Hot-dip galvanised steel and aluminium alloys are the preferred materials.
Planning: Industrial projects require detailed scaffolding planning before construction begins – often involving structural calculations, risk assessments, handover reports and approval documentation. Simply ‘starting to build’ is not an option in plant construction.
The main scaffolding systems for industrial applications
Modular scaffolding – the backbone of industrial scaffolding
The modular scaffolding system (also known as ring scaffolding or the Allround system) is the most widely used system in industrial scaffolding. The principle is as follows: uprights with permanently welded perforated discs (joints), to which ledgers, diagonal braces and special components can be attached at almost any angle. This enables three-dimensional structures that adapt precisely to the shape of the respective facility.
Typical industrial applications of the modular scaffolding system: distillation columns and reactors in refineries, turbine and generator areas in power stations, vessels and tanks of all sizes, pipework bridges and walkways, boilers and combustion systems, cooling towers, chimneys and silos, as well as shipyards and shipbuilding.
Layher Allround is the best-known and most widely used modular scaffolding system in the world. It offers up to eight connections per junction, a high degree of system versatility and an excellent resale value. CETRAC stocks Layher Allround in all standard configurations across more than 24,000 m² of warehouse space in Leipzig.

Support scaffolding – for heavy loads and formwork
Support scaffolding is not primarily intended as working scaffolding, but rather as a temporary supporting structure. It takes the load from heavy building components, formwork and structures along defined load paths and safely transfers it to the ground. In industrial construction, it is used when floor structures, large superstructures or heavy machine parts need to be temporarily supported.
Within the CETRAC range, the Layher TG-60 is the most robust scaffolding system available – a heavy-duty modular steel system designed to meet extreme load requirements in industrial and civil engineering.
Applications for industrial scaffolding: Supporting ceiling formwork in industrial halls, load transfer beneath pipework bridges and superstructures, supporting bridge and ramp structures during assembly, temporary support structures for the replacement of heavy machine parts, as well as platforms and mezzanine levels subject to high surface loads.
Important: Structural analysis by an engineer is always required for supporting scaffolding. CETRAC can assist with planning and quantity take-offs – please contact our experts directly.

Assembly scaffolding – the work platform for installation and maintenance work
The assembly scaffold provides stable, wide working platforms for installation, maintenance and assembly work on technical systems. Unlike standard facade scaffolding, assembly scaffolding is designed to meet the requirements of industrial and technical trades: greater usable width for tools and components, higher load-bearing capacity, and adaptability to confined spaces in machine rooms and plant areas.
Typical areas of application for industrial scaffolding: electrical and instrumentation and control (I&C) installation in switchgear and technical areas, pipework installation and insulation, ventilation and air-conditioning systems in industrial halls, maintenance of pumps, compressors and heat exchangers, installations in cold stores, underground car parks and tunnel structures, as well as maintenance work on production facilities.
Scaffolding planning in industrial construction – what matters
Industrial scaffolding projects rarely fail because of the materials – more often because of inadequate preparation. These five planning steps are essential in plant construction:
1 Risk assessment prior to the start of construction
Every industrial plant has its own risk profiles: potentially explosive atmospheres (Ex zones in accordance with ATEX), heat sources, corrosive chemicals, and vibrations caused by running machinery. The risk assessment specifies which safety measures must be observed during installation, modification and dismantling, and which materials are permitted in the respective zone.
2. Structural design and load verification
As soon as increased loads arise – whether due to heavy tools, bundles of materials or the simultaneous use of scaffolding by several teams – a structural analysis is mandatory. This applies in particular to load-bearing scaffolding, space-framed scaffolding in industrial halls and all structures that are not erected in accordance with standard plans.
3 System selection: modular or frame?
For most industrial applications, modular scaffolding is the first choice – due to its adaptability to complex geometries. Frame scaffolding can be a sensible option when erecting scaffolding on straight, standardised access facades, such as straight hall walls or simple tank sides.
4. Plan an access solution
In industrial projects, ensuring safe access to all levels is often more difficult to achieve than in standard building construction. Stair tower modules, integrated ladderways and access decks must be included in the plans from the outset – not as an afterthought. Particularly in the case of tall structures (> 10 m), a separate stair tower is required by regulations and is essential for safety.
5. Acceptance, documentation and approval
Every piece of scaffolding on an industrial site must be inspected and approved by a competent person before it is used for the first time. The approval certificate (scaffolding certificate) must be displayed clearly on the scaffolding and must specify its condition, load class, restrictions on use and the name of the person responsible for erecting it. In industrial environments, many operators also require an in-house approval.
Scaffolding for refineries – special requirements
Refineries are among the most challenging operating environments in the scaffolding industry. High temperatures, corrosive chemicals, narrow pipework aisles, circular structures and explosion-proof zones require the highest level of planning and system expertise.
Modular scaffolding – in particular the Layher Allround System – is the industry standard in refineries worldwide because it is the only system that offers the necessary three-dimensional flexibility. Special components for internal radii, semi-circular structures and cableways for transporting materials along columns round off the range of systems on offer.
Key requirements in refinery structural engineering: Use of tools and materials that do not produce sparks (in Ex zones), monitoring of all openings and access points to the plant, regular inspections even whilst the plant is in operation, coordination with the plant safety officer, and documentation of all items entering and leaving the plant (material tracking system).
Scaffolding for power stations and energy facilities
Power stations – whether conventional (coal, gas, oil) or renewable (wind power, biomass) – have a constant need for industrial scaffolding: for inspections, maintenance work, the replacement of plant components and for extension works.
Typical scaffolding tasks in power stations include erecting scaffolding around boilers and hot-gas ducts, erecting scaffolding in turbine and generator areas during overhauls, scaffolding for chimney installation and repairs, work on cooling tower structures, and temporary platforms for heavy assembly work (using supporting scaffolding).
The rapid availability of scaffolding equipment is crucial, particularly for maintenance projects: power station maintenance work often takes place within tight timeframes (outage periods), during which any delay proves costly. CETRAC delivers scaffolding equipment by express delivery on demand – with immediate availability from its Leipzig warehouse.
Scaffolding for shipyards and shipbuilding
Shipbuilding and ship repair are among the most demanding scaffolding applications of all. Curved ship hulls, confined cargo holds, swaying decks and extreme working heights in dry docks require maximum flexibility.
Modular scaffolding is the only sensible choice here: it can follow the curves of the ship’s hull, can be individually adapted to the confined space of the hold, and provides the necessary load-bearing capacity for sandblasters, painting equipment and heavy machinery. CETRAC supplies industrial scaffolding to shipyards worldwide – by lorry or in overseas containers.
Buying scaffolding for industrial projects – advantages over hiring
For industrial businesses, scaffolding firms and maintenance departments that require scaffolding on a regular basis, buying rather than hiring usually pays off from the second or third project onwards. The benefits are clear:
With the CETRAC Rebuy Option, purchased materials can be sold back once the project is complete – at market-rate prices, with an immediate down payment and organised logistics.

FAQ – Buying industrial scaffolding
Scaffolding is designed for conventional building construction – straight façades, standard load classes, normal environmental conditions. Industrial scaffolding must be capable of much more: higher load classes (LC 4–6), more complex geometries (pipes, tanks, circular structures), specific material requirements (explosion protection, corrosion resistance) and significantly more rigorous planning and documentation requirements.
Modular scaffolding – in particular the Layher Allround System – is the global standard in plant construction. It offers the necessary flexibility for any geometry and is used in refineries, power stations, shipyards and chemical plants around the world.
No individual structural analysis is required for standard working scaffolds erected on level ground and with a standard configuration – the manufacturer’s system drawings apply. However, as soon as there are increased loads, special structures, load-bearing scaffolds or assembly configurations that deviate from the standard, a structural analysis by an engineer is mandatory.
First, determine the scaffolding area and height; then specify the system type and draw up the bill of quantities – including special components, access solutions and safety equipment. EasyFlow, CETRAC’s digital configurator, provides structured support throughout this process. Our advisory team offers free, direct assistance with complex projects.
