Cantilever brackets in scaffolding: gain flexibility, keep safety

Cantilever brackets are indispensable in scaffolding when it comes to extending working platforms or bridging obstacles on the façade (such as roof overhangs or projections). However, the use of second-hand brackets requires specialist knowledge and a thorough inspection of the material. In this guide, you’ll find out what matters most.

The function of the cantilever bracket: more than just a widening

A cantilever bracket shifts the load point of the scaffolding deck outwards or inwards. As it is loaded on one side only, enormous lever forces are generated at the connection points to the vertical standard. Consequently, the structural condition here is even more critical than with simple horizontal tubes.

Checklist: When is a cantilever bracket still fit for purpose?

1. Perpendicularity and dimensional stability

Cantilever brackets can easily bend as a result of overloading or improper handling.

  • Inspection: The angle between the vertical connecting element and the horizontal support arm must be exactly 90 degrees (or correspond to the system dimension).
  • Please note: Even the slightest misalignment will prevent the decks from lying flat, creating a trip hazard.

2 Condition of the pipe couplings (RV)

  • Inspection: If the bracket is supplied without a fixed pipe connector (without RV), the sockets for the balustrade posts must be perfectly round and free from any dents.
  • Safety: A loose or damaged pipe coupler compromises fall protection on the extended level.

3. Welds and corrosion at the load-bearing points

The connection between the bracket’s diagonal brace and the support arm bears the main load.

  • Look out for: hairline cracks in the welds. On second-hand brackets, the galvanised coating should be intact to prevent deep-seated corrosion at these critical points.

Carrying out large-scale projects using second-hand consoles

Expanding your scaffolding stock by 100 or 200 brackets is a significant investment. Opting for certified second-hand equipment goes a long way towards preserving your business’s cash flow.

We currently have a substantial stock, enabling us to supply even large-scale projects immediately:

  • 2-ribbed 0.65 m cantilever bracket: Over 200 pieces available immediately.
  • Canopy extension arms (0.64 m): Over 100 in stock for specialised safety applications.

Quality beats price

When buying brackets, don’t rely on unverified private sales. At CETRAC, every bracket is manually inspected for its geometry and the integrity of its welds. This means you benefit from the second-hand price without having to worry about the safety officer’s inspection.

FAQ: What you need to know about cantilever brackets in scaffolding

A cantilever bracket is used to extend the working surface of scaffolding inwards (towards the façade) or outwards. This is particularly useful for bridging roof overhangs or creating wider working areas for materials and tradespeople.

We stock a range of models, including the classic cantilever bracket 2-ribbed (0.65 m) and specialised canopy booms (0.64 m). We currently have over 200 units of the 0.65 m version and over 100 canopy booms available for immediate collection.

Safety is the top priority. Ensure that the angle between the connecting element and the support arm corresponds exactly to the system dimension and that there is no bending. Furthermore, the welded joints must be free from hairline cracks and the pipe connectors (if fitted) must be fully functional.

Some brackets are supplied without tube connectors (or TCs) as standard, to allow maximum flexibility when erecting railing posts. In this case, separate tube connectors must be inserted and secured if the scaffolding requires fall protection in this position.

The load-bearing capacity depends on the system and the overhang. As a rule, standard brackets (0.32 m to 0.73 m) are approved for the same load classes as the main scaffolding, provided that structural stability is ensured by diagonal braces or additional supports.

Why are the pipe connectors (or ‘RV’) missing from the list for some brackets?
