Narrow scaffolding: solutions for tight passages, pavements and courtyards
Is there 80 cm between the house wall and the property boundary? Standard facade scaffolding won’t fit there – but narrow scaffolding with a system width of 50–70 cm will. Here you can find out what width categories are available, which systems are suitable, and what you need to bear in mind regarding load class and fall protection.
When narrow scaffolding is the right choice
Typical applications: narrow passageways between buildings, scaffolding on the pavement (leaving enough space for pedestrians!), courtyards, balconies, gable walls with extensions – anywhere where standard scaffolding simply won’t fit.
Understanding width classes: Scaffolding is categorised into width classes in accordance with DIN EN 12811 – W06 denotes plank widths from approx. 60 cm, W09 for approx. 90 cm. The standard ‘narrow’ systems are the 70er-Baureihen: Plettac SL70 and Hünnebeck Bosta 70 with a system width of approx. 70–74 cm. These are perfectly adequate for painting and plastering work alone (load class 3) – for bricklaying work involving the storage of materials, you’ll need width class W09 and load class 4–5.
Even narrower: for individual sections measuring less than approx. 60 cm, brackets can be used to widen a narrow basic scaffold frame at specific points – we stock a range of suitable, tested scaffold brackets and scaffolding parts.
Buying tip: Second-hand 70er-Systeme are widely available and affordable – see second-hand Plettac, second-hand Hünnebeck or the full range of second-hand stock. The scaffolding area calculator will tell you how much area you need.
