What does “scaffolding for a single-family house” actually mean?
In Germany, a single-family house has an average living area of 140–160 m² and a facade area of roughly 200–350 m², depending on floor plan, roof shape and number of storeys. Depending on the project, different scaffolding configurations are sufficient for work on the facade, roof or gable.
There are essentially three typical usage scenarios:
1. Facade work (painting, rendering, ETICS insulation):
This requires a fully or partially wrap-around facade scaffold with load class 3–4, at least one working level, side protection and anchoring.
2. Roof work (roofers, carpenters, PV installation):
Roofing scaffold with an optional catch level at the eaves, working height depending on eaves height (usually 4–8 m), decking in 0.73 m bay width.
3. Combined projects (facade + roof at the same time):
Complete wrap-around scaffold with roofing or protective wall modules, several working levels.
How much scaffolding area do you need for a single-family house?
This is the most important question before buying or enquiring. The scaffolding area is calculated as: perimeter of the house × working height.
A typical detached single-family house with a pitched roof has the following guide values:
| House type | Perimeter | Eaves height | Scaffolding area (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bungalow (1 storey) | approx. 36 m | 3.5 m | approx. 126 m² |
| Standard house (1.5 storeys) | approx. 42 m | 5.5 m | approx. 230 m² |
| Large house / semi-detached (2 storeys) | approx. 48 m | 7.0 m | approx. 336 m² |
| House with dormer / bay window | approx. 50–60 m | 7.5 m | approx. 375–450 m² |
→ For a precise quantity calculation, use the EasyFlow scaffolding area calculator – free of charge, directly online.
Rule of thumb: For a standard single-family house you should expect a scaffolding area between 100 m² and 350 m².
Which scaffolding system is best suited?
Frame scaffold (facade scaffold)
The frame scaffold – systems such as Layher Blitz, Hünnebeck Bosta or Plettac SL – is the most widely used system for single-family houses. It is quick to erect, offers solid load classes (2–4) and is extremely widespread, which makes compatibility and spare-parts sourcing easier.
Typical bay width: 0.73 m (Layher, Plettac) or 0.70 m (Hünnebeck) Typical bay height: 2.50 m or 3.07 m Load class: 3 (200 kg/m²) sufficient for facade work, painters, roofers
Modular scaffold (Allround / Rux)
The modular scaffold (e.g. Layher Allround) is more flexible for irregular floor plans, bay windows or dormers. However, it is somewhat more complex to erect and more expensive to purchase. Recommended if the house has an irregular building structure.
Roofing scaffold
Designed specifically for securing the eaves and roof edges. It is combined with the facade scaffold or used on its own when only roof work is required. System-compatible with all common frame and modular scaffolds at CETRAC.
Mobile scaffold / ladder scaffold
For smaller individual jobs (e.g. painting individual facade sections) with a maximum working height of 2–3 m. Not suitable for complete single-family house projects.

Buy or hire? Does buying pay off for single-family house projects?
That depends on how often you use the scaffold. For trade businesses with regular single-family house projects, buying almost always pays off – here is the direct comparison:
| Hire | Purchase (used, CETRAC) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost for 100 m² (4 weeks) | approx. 600–1,200 € | 2,440–4,086 € (one-off) |
| Cost for 10 projects | approx. 6,000–12,000 € | 2,440–4,086 € in total |
| Flexibility | High (no storage needed) | Medium (storage space needed) |
| Availability | Depends on the hire company | Immediately after purchase |
| Resale value | – | Yes (CETRAC Rebuy option) |
| Choice of system | Limited | Free choice |
→ Rule of thumb: If you use a scaffolding system for 2–3 single-family house projects per year, the investment has paid for itself after 1–2 years.
What belongs in a complete scaffolding package for a single-family house?
A complete facade or roof scaffold for a single-family house consists of more than just frames and decks. Here is an overview of the most important components:
| Component | Function | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Standing frames | Load-bearing base element | Width 0.73 m or 0.70 m depending on system |
| Scaffold decking | Working surface | Steel or aluminium, system-compatible |
| Diagonal braces | Bracing & structural stability | Mandatory for stability |
| Scaffolding feet (base jacks) | Height adjustment at ground level | Especially important on uneven ground |
| Guardrail frames / side protection | Fall protection | Required from 2 m working height |
| Toe boards | Fall protection for material | Mandatory on working levels |
| Scaffolding anchors | Wall anchoring | System-dependent, approx. 8–12 per 100 m² |
| Scaffolding stairs / ladder access | Access system | Recommended from 3 working levels |
| Scaffolding brackets (ETICS) | Extension of the working width | Needed for insulation work |

Practical tip: how to plan your house scaffold correctly
Step 1 – measure the facade area: perimeter of the house × eaves height = required scaffolding area (rough estimate). For precise results: calculate your scaffolding area with EasyFlow.
Step 2 – define the scaffold type: Facade work only? → frame scaffold. Roof + facade combined? → roofing scaffold + facade scaffold. Insulation work (ETICS)? → allow for brackets.
Step 3 – choose the system: Do you already run a system in your business? Then it is best to extend it compatibly. Starting from scratch? Layher Blitz or Hünnebeck Bosta are recommended for single-family house projects.
Step 4 – quantity calculation: Calculate the number of frames, decks, diagonals and anchors. CETRAC supports you with the parts list – just send an enquiry.
Step 5 – delivery & storage: CETRAC delivers within 24–48h in Germany. Storage space for ~100 m² of scaffolding: approx. 15–25 m² (stack width approx. 1 m).

FAQ – scaffolding for a single-family house
For a standard two-storey single-family house with a pitched roof you will usually need between 200 m² and 350 m² of scaffolding area, depending on perimeter and eaves height. Small houses often manage with 100–150 m². With the EasyFlow configurator you can determine the area directly online.
For most single-family house projects, a classic frame scaffold (Layher Blitz, Hünnebeck Bosta, Plettac SL) is perfectly sufficient. For irregular floor plans or several dormers, a modular scaffold such as Layher Allround is a good choice.
A used brand-name scaffold for approx. 100–120 m² costs from around 2,440 € (Layher Allround, 101 m²) up to approx. 4,086 € (Hünnebeck Bosta, 122 m²) at CETRAC. Larger packages for scaffolding a complete house (300–350 m²) are in the range of 10,000–12,000 €.
For a one-off job, hiring can feel cheaper. For trade businesses with 2+ projects per year, however, the purchase pays for itself within a short time – especially as used CETRAC scaffolds retain a stable resale value.
In addition to frames and decks you will need: diagonal braces, scaffolding feet (base jacks), guardrail frames, toe boards, scaffolding anchors and at least one ladder access or scaffolding stair. CETRAC will put together a complete parts list for you on request.
In Germany, scaffolding on private property does not usually require a separate permit. However, as soon as the scaffold occupies a public footpath or road, a special-use permit from the local authority is required. Apply early!
Within Germany, CETRAC delivers in 2–3 days. Express delivery is available on request, and certain packages can even be delivered within 24–48 hours. Worldwide delivery is possible for international projects – just send an enquiry.
